Beaglemania A Pet Rescue Mystery Linda O Johnston Books

Lauren Vancouver, animal lover and rescuer, runs HotRescues, a no kill animal shelter. Lauren, a widow, is mother to two college age kids. She has found an enemy in Efram Kiley, an animal abuser who works at a puppy mill where she recently rescued four beagle pups who were tossed in a drain pipe. Efram feels the same about her, and threatens Lauren and the shelter. That same night, he is found stabbed to death at HotRescues, and Lauren quickly becomes the primary suspect after discovering the body. The detective on the case is certain it’s her and all but refuses to look at anyone else. Lauren decides to do her own little detective work and take on the case herself to discover who really did Efram in.

This is the first in the new Pet Rescue series, and I really enjoyed it! It’s perfect for animal lovers who are fans of mysteries. I’ve recently started reading cozy mysteries and find them to be a lot of fun; this one was no exception. I was particularly interested in this cozy because of the animal aspect. I am a true animal lover, and thoroughly enjoyed reading about other like-minded people, particularly Lauren, who has dedicated her life to saving animals. I really liked Lauren as a character and thought she was feisty and full of sass. She was determined not only to rescue animals, but to find out who killed Efram. I thought the mystery aspect was strong as well. I kept speculating about possible killers throughout the whole story, and was not able to correctly guess. I was surprised to discover who the killer was at the end. The killer didn’t really seem that likely and I’m still doing a little “hmm” about it, but hey, you never know what could push someone to murder. Though this is an adult series, since it is a cozy, and not at all graphic, I think this book could be appropriate for YA readers as well. I’m really looking forward to Lauren’s adventures in the next installment, The More The Terrier, but was sad to find out it doesn’t come out until October! :(
This series is a spin off of Linda’s first cozy series, Kendra Ballantyne – Pet Sitter Mysteries. I haven’t read that series yet, but I plan on it really soon! More animal mysteries – hurray!

Beaglemania A Pet Rescue Mystery Linda O Johnston Books Reviews

A good story to show some of the stuff a shelter has to go through to save dogs from puppy mills and horders and add in murder in the mix and it was a good read.
I just love dogs, and hate people that abuse them.
I glad that the abuser was killed, and animals found homes.
I learned a lot about puppy mills, and the not-quite-sane people who sometimes run them. This story did have quite a bit of romance in it. I never really got into this story and it took me awhile to finish it. It had a happy ending, which I like, but I guess I like stories more from the vantage point of a dog.
I love cozy mysteries. This series is one of my favorites, and I really enjoyed this book. It has an interesting plot. The author does a good job of story telling and developing the characters and area.
I love the Pet Sitter series by Linda O. Johnston. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

But I couldn't like this "Pet Rescue" mystery. I like a mystery that is escapism, perhaps with a bit of humor. This series, with the spectre of animals being abused and euthanized, is just too dark.

The person who killed the dog abuser in the case should have been given a medal, in my opinion.

None of the characters were particularly sparkling. I liked Lauren, but I don't have any desire to spend more time with her. I don't want to hear more about animals in cages.

If another Pet Sitter mystery comes out, I'll quickly buy it, but I'm not returning to the Pet Rescue series.
This book was an extension of another series I love by this talented author. In fact Ms. Johnston crossing both series made the characters instantly familiar to me. A very clever concept.

This book revolves around a murder at a private pet-rescue operation that is directed by Lauren Vancouver. Ms. Vancouver is our new sleuth and she brings her talents of organization to the search for the killer, which, we know is Not herself, despite what the prime detective feels.

In a way, I wish that our police persons would give our sleuths a vote of confidence once in awhile, but at least this detective didn't harass her to bits and pieces.

Also, inside the book, we glimpse the cruelties of puppy mills and how "non-kill" animal shelters work. Our local shelter just joined this grouping and I'm so happy about it.

I expect this book series will continue to gain strengths and soon be a 5 star one for me.
I have to say, I started this book with HIGH hopes ! Pet Rescue in a cozy, seems like a purrfect match to me ;D However, the book left MUCH to be desired, unfortunately. The premise was great, some of the story was wonderful. However the protagonist was wishy washy at best, and down right stupid at times. Who in their right mind would make out with someone that they thought *might* have murdered someone, and be setting her up ? There were lots of little things that just didn't add up, throughout the whole book. I hated the part towards the end with the pit bull, way to spread fear and misunderstanding....ALSO, I agree with the other reviewer who pointed out the very BASIC info that male dogs are neutered and female dogs are spayed. Not only should the author have known that, yes, the editor should have caught it !! I hope in future books the author makes Lauren less passive-agressive ( runs to men to be comforted, and then paces around trying to draw out the killer....REALLY ???....UGH !! ) . I'm sorry if this review seems harsh, I had VERY high hopes and expectations for this series, I hope it improves. The story idea is WONDERFUL....but how 'bout actually helping out real live animals by portraying this issue correctly, and with more and better facts ? I'll read the second one....fingers crossed that it is better than the first.
