Catherine McNamara’s stories take the reader on a pulsing, eloquent journey through post-colonial migration, and loss and decline in Europe. She deals with dirty family secrets, the stealth of AIDS, misunderstood gay love and neglected children. In her continental pieces she shows Europe’s laundered, subjugated environment and her melancholy urbanites. Some stories are interlinked. Two foolhardy snowboarders challenge the savagery of mountain weather in the Dolomites. A Ghanaian woman strokes across a pool in the tropics, flaunting her pregnant belly before her lover’s partner. A sex worker is enlisted to care for her Italian lover’s elderly parents. Hit by a car in Brussels, a young woman returns to her doctor boyfriend.
Pelt and Other Stories lingers on the cusp between Europe and Africa, between ancient sentiments and modern disquiet.

I write short stories. I don't read them. I know that sounds contradictory, but when I look for books to read I usually head for non fiction or novels. Not short stories. But I dived head first into Catherine McNamara's stories and couldn't stop. The characters arrive suddenly, fully-fleshed, scorchingly arrogant or selfish or anguished. There is no apology. No back story. Mc Namara writes forward as if she's on rocket fuel. In fact, reading her work is a bit like taking off in a plane. You sink back in your seat as you're hurled into the sky. "The Coptic Bride", the first story, had me gasping at the end with a revelation that's biblical (no, REALLY biblical). And it works. So looking forward to reading her next book.Product details

Pelt and other stories edition by Catherine McNamara Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love to read and "Pelt" and all of the other stories are a great read! The truly wonderful language made me stop from time to time and chuckle and reread - so fresh and new! I have never been to Africa or some of the other European cities in the stories but after reading "Pelt and Other Stories" I felt connected, sometimes a little freaked out but always interested in the characters and what and why they did what they were doing - would love to see the characters again in a longer novel or more short stories!
Some of the stories here were really interesting, from the far corners of the world and containing those different ways of seeing the world. Some of them were better than others but overall it was a good read and I enjoyed it.
