3.5 ☆

Alright, so 2 things before I start on this.

1. This is a clean romance. If you're looking for some dirty, dirty, bow-chicka-wow-wow, forget about it. It ain't gonna happen in this book. If you can't enjoy a romance without sex, then this is NOT for you. Move along.

2. If you take issue with editing errors, I will warn you now -- This book has them. They do bother me, but they weren't bad enough to completely put me off of finishing.

Now, lets do this.

Alexia and Phillip are in college and are determined to avoid each other. That doesn't work out quite so well for them and they end up dating. They're both still alive through the gift of organ donation. Alexia knows about Phillip's but he doesn't know about hers. This story tells how their relationship forms and grows. You see the struggles and you also see them overcome them.

The story itself, I really had no issue with at all. The execution, however, threw me a little bit. Last Heartbeat is written in dual POVs with alternating chapters between Alexia and Phillip. Most of the time I don't really mind this, but in this case, for the first half of the book Phillip's chapters were basically a repetition of Alexia's chapters with no new information. It really did throw me off and I didn't think I would be able to finish the book.

I stuck it out though, and I am so glad I did. Around 60%, something switched gears and Phillip's chapters became more defined and less repetitive and that greatly improved my reading experience.

The last half of this book is what really grabs you. When you realize what has actually happened and the connection they have, it kind of blows your mind a little bit. To me, the whys of their relationship don't really bother me, if its because of their connection, doesn't that just make it all the more spectacular?

And when everything fell apart, my heart was broken. Watching the lengths that Phillip went to in order to fix it was so sweet.

I have to say, if the first half of the book had been written a little differently, this could have been a 4 - 4.5 star read for me.

This was T.R. Lykins debut, and for that I think she did a great job. I'm confident, with time and experience her writing will only get better.

Last Heartbeat Last Heartbeat Series Book 1 edition by Tina Stewart Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This was an interesting book in that it is a romance about a couple who each had organs transplanted. It adds some difficulties to their romance that a reader doesn't often see occur. Alexia was fifteen when she had her failing heart transplanted. Phillip was a little older when he lost his liver and his brother.
Otherwise, it's a fairly predictable college romance with the evil girl trying to steal away the guy and the friendly roommate for the girl. It's probably perfect for younger readers in their teens.
I did find the writing style somewhat stilted. Teenagers today use contractions when they speak, not everything is I will and I could not. And the book itself was very repetitious. It was told in alternating POVs, but by about a third of the way through I found I could just skip Phillip's chapters because most of it had been covered in Alexia's chapter before.
This story is very special to me and really hits home. I gave it 5 stars. One of my friends/coworkers is a organ donor, Bonnie Flexon. She donated her kidney to her sister. Her sister was on dialysis for 1 year before receiving Bonnie's kidney. The doctors said ideally it would've been 3 years before she received a cadaver kidney. Both are doing well and it has been 18 years since their surgery. I hope this story makes you realize how special being a organ donor can be and that you will take the time to consider becoming a donor if you aren't already. You would be amazed how many lives you can save by allowing your organs to be donated upon your passing.

I knew what I wanted to happen from the very start of this book. I was very pleased with the way it turned out. I'm not going to give any spoilers. Alexia is literally on her last heartbeat when she receives a donor heart. She goes to college and falls hard for Phillip. Both of them think they are broken but will another accident make them closer or completely break them both?
I have read romance novels all my life. Starting with the Sweet Dreams books (I'm dating myself) in my pre-teen years, Danielle Steele in my early 20s, and Nicholas Sparks later in that decade, I'm glad to continue my occasional reading of romance books. I'm glad to know Tina has written what is considered to be "clean" romance. She does have the elements in the many Sweet Dreams books, such as boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl break up, and boy and girl come back together. Though this wasn't the steamy, sometimes forbidden romances blatantly portrayed in Steele's and Sparks' novels, but not entirely what I'd consider to be "clean," it was still easy to read the parts when Phillip and Alexia shared a bed. My favorite hook is the biology class and the project they both have to do. I do like how she switches POVs in every chapter, making both of them in first-person. This book is like "A Walk to Remember" meets "Return to Me," college style.
Audible Review Last Heartbeat on audio is fun and interesting as the Narrator changes her voice to suit the character she's reading to you.
Story Review Last Heartbeat is an emotional tilt a whirl sweet romance. I was immediately attached to both Alexia and Phillip and felt a kinship to them. Both of their histories remind me of someone I love. It was an instant freeze for me. Either I'm going to love this story or hate it. Well, I absolutely loved it. Their stories and health issues were written with great care and tenderness. With the the ups and downs of the relationship my emotions went right with Alexia's. At times I wanted to knock some sense into Phillip. He had my heart though and Alexia's as well. This story is a perfect story of love conquering all.
