Trite dialog, alternating POVs between first person to third person, use of present tense In 3rd person...all of these are things I can overlook or adapt to if the characterization is good and the story interesting. Unfortunately that was not the case in 'Geoducks.'The two main protagonists are uninteresting, the female secondary character does nothing but try to push her best friend in to having sex with the neighbor, the old boyfriend...whoever she can think of. I found myself very easily distracted while trying to plow through this book and putting it down often. I finally threw in the towel at the 25% mark.
Honestly, I couldn't find anything to like about this book. It was boring, trivial and entirely forgettable. Thank goodness it was free.

There are very few stories that I've read that I have difficulty putting down when I have to get other things done in my day. Usually a bookmark is placed at a stopping point and I pick up where I left off at a more convenient time. Not this book. Within the first few minutes of reading, I was instantly intrigued by Maggie, the main character, and her trusty (& adorable) furry companion Biscuit. Maggie has chosen to live the quiet island life on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, and she's submerged in an idyllic existence. Or is she? It turns out that the true answer is so much deeper than I ever expected, and one that inspired some self-reflection upon completion (along with longing for a few wishing rocks of my own, making this beautiful book cover even more affecting). I remained riveted with a cast of characters that include the island full-timers that embrace her, a hot lumberjack for a neighbor who is easy on the eyes, and a stellar array of sassy, intelligent, hilarious and trust-worthy friends who've stood by each other over the years. The lingering memories that span the course of their shared life experiences, and importance of those emotional, physical and romantic connections, flutter quietly beneath the surface of the journey, just waiting to be re-discovered. It's the reason I couldn't put this book down.
This book is incredibly touching, and the ending made me smile like I haven't in a really long time. I truly loved this story and can't recommend it enough!
I will admit that I let my love and fascination for "Twilight" steer me on a course of all things young and in love. I've found myself over the last several years devouring many YA novels where real life is just beginning and love is new - and often times hot and sweaty. And that's OK. It's fun and often very sexy and I love it.
But as "a woman of certain age" it is rare to find myself reflected back in the pages - or computer screen - of the book where I want to lose myself for a few hours. Thank God for "Geoducks Are for Lovers." Finally a book I can relate to. Finally characters that look, and sound and feel like I know them, and better yet, I'm friends with them.
Geoducks is a love story, but instead of the newness of first love it's about second chances, and hope. And friendship. And facing life with a renewed sense of purpose and spirit. I found myself wondering if author Daisy Prescott had snuck a peek at my own journals. Maggie is a soul sister, building a good life for herself and cultivating strong and loving friendships and intriguing acquaintances. But buried under the contentment of her lovely island life is an ember of hope of something more, maybe something she lost long ago but can find again. You find yourself going along with Maggie on this reunion weekend and rooting for her to open eyes to the second chance presenting itself. It's never too late to love and be loved.
This is a wonderful debut novel from Daisy Prescott and I hope not only to see more from Prescott but maybe even more from these characters. I wasn't ready to leave Maggie's cabin. Her Pacific Northwest island home is almost as much a character in this story as Maggie, Gil, Sela, Quinn, Ben and Jo. It felt like coming home each time I found myself imaging the view of the beach from Maggie's deck. It was the perfect backdrop to renew friendships and feel the once forgotten sparks found in flirting with a lost love.
Maggie and Gil found their way into my heart and I would love to see where they go from here. And I want to get that warm feeling again reading about characters who I can relate to and who seem as comforting and supportive and fun and infuriating as my own group of friends. Geoducks Are for Lovers made me hopeful again.
