Sir Gabriel of Merston the hero of the book was a very tortured brooding type of guy and had a very dark past after witnessing the murder of his mother. So in turn he makes a deal with the villan Lord Tibald after he kills his father. It seemed at first how was he going to like anyone?
Lady Elevyn was a likable heroine beautiful, bold and very courageous to stand up to just about anyone especially Lord Tibald. The hero not only gravitated towards her but fell in love with her too.
There were a few typos that I noticed and not to detract from the storyline however. Chapter 7 was missing also or maybe was added to either Chapter 6 or 8. Overall the story was good it was slow at times but a fairly good read.

The Crimson Castle Samantha Holt 9781484124918 Books Reviews

I purchased this after seeing it recommended on constantly and am so glad I did. I've not read medieval romance before but the author totally drew me into the medieval world. I love romance and this delivers everything you'd expect along with a bit of danger and some sensual scenes.
Medieval Romance with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. Evie's fear of the evil and savage Lord Tibald who wanted to conquer her and take her family's lands made it an exciting adventure in medieval times. The sexy and intimidating Gabriel caught Evie's eye and she wasn't sure of his intentions or his motives.

All in all, a good story.
A great, history filled read. Fairly well paced, with great chemistry between the characters. Gabriel is the ultimate tortured hero and Evelyn is a fiery lady. I loved how they interacted together. There is a few sensual scenes that are very tasteful and romantic and the ending was great. Lots of action and romance. Ms. Holt conjured up a wonderful medieval world with good writing and nice descriptions. Recommended!
This novel takes place in Medieval England around the time of the Crusades. The main characters are complex, and the story itself is full of intrigue and romance. It is superbly well-written and seems to come to life right before your eyes. Ms. Holt has a way of grabbing your interest and keeping you on the edge through the entire book. I literally could not put it down and read it in one go. This is a must read for anyone who loves a great romance.
There are already many great reviews posted, here is mine. )

A romantic saga set in one of my favorite eras, Medieval times; a story of anguish, angst, betrayal, forgiveness, redemption and love. Ms. Holt does a wonderful job painting a picture of beautiful Lady Evelyn, her land, Beldersert, as well as the dark Sir Gabriel and sinister Lord Tibald. From the beginning, I was with Evelyn in her loathing of Sir Gabriel and distaste of Lord Tibald. I was riveted to my seat, as I read my books on my laptop, from the very beginning.

Evelyn did not like, nor trust Sir Gabriel and Lord Tibald disgusted her with his temper and greed. To save her people, she agrees to meet with Lord Tibald, who makes her an offer she cannot refuse. Unofficially imprisoned in the Etone Castle, she learns there is more to Gabriel than she first thought, but his actions continually bring him to face his demons; he seeks redemption, but the temper and heavy hand of Lord Tibald continually threatens the lives of Evelyn and Gabriel and their budding love.

Throughout the book, I was on an emotional roller coaster as the fires burned in the main characters; lust, greed, passion, anger, which then turned to ice as indifference, false bravado and horror came forefront over and over.

My mind had been changed and nearing the end, I was rooting for Evelyn and Gabriel, but knew that they would have to fight hard and sacrifice much for there to be any type of 'happily ever after.' By the end, I was reading so fast, wanting to see how everything unfolded, wondering who would win in the end and seeing twist after twist of the story, that I literally gave myself a headache. I could not stop reading though.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Holt's style of writing and this story made a fan of me. I look forward to reading more of her books. I think a well-written book engages all 5 senses and provides the reader with a connection to the characters. This is definitely well written and I will be reading it again and again.
What an excellent book! Author Samantha Holt delivers a lush, well-written historical romance with just the right amounts of suspense, intrigue and eroticism. I'm a fan of medieval fiction, and thoroughly enjoyed this historically accurate tale of love, lust, treachery and triumph. Holt's characters leap from the page with depth and clarity, and the dialog has enough authenticity for the period without being distracting as is sometimes the case with medieval stories. The author's descriptive narrative is very visual, and brought to mind something along the lines of The Tudors, which is one of my all-time favorite HBO series- I could actually 'see' the story unfold as I was reading it. Kudos to the author, and I look forward to reading more of her work. Five stars.
I've read The Angel's Assassin by Samantha Holt and love it so much that I had to purchase this one. I must admit, that I don't think the writing is quite on par with Angel but I still adored the story and the chemistry between them was amazing. Evelyn and Gabriel are both flawed characters and the hero is definitely one of those damaged hero types. He thinks himself unworthy of Evelyn because of previous deeds and Evelyn struggles to see past those deeds, to the man that he really is. Evelyn ends up in danger and both of them release just how deep their love is but Lord Tibald wants Evelyn and uses her feelings for Gabriel against her to get her to marry him. I won't give away the ending but there was a real twist and it was exciting. Holt fans will love this.
