In the tradition of Cracker and Sebastian Bergman comes Swedish psychologist Siri Bergman, a gifted therapist whose own life is intensely messed up. Treating a variety of patients with skill and patience, Siri herself drinks wine to excess and sleeps each night with every light turned on in her secluded house, and a flashlight by her bed. In some ways life is good. She feels she's helping her patients, and she's part of a small practice with her best friend and an older mentor. But Siri is having trouble dealing with the death of her husband, and has begun to feel that someone is watching her. When one of her patients is found drowned near her house, the police become involved. Is she being paranoid, or is she the target of a psychopath?

While I found myself often becoming annoyed with this character, a seemingly intelligent woman who consistently made stupid choices, and I thought some of the activities of the villain were mystifying, I still stayed up til 2 am reading. Siri's narration was compelling. I enjoyed her's and other characters' musings on good and evil. And I especially enjoyed the climactic scene.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers, then you will probably love this book.

Some Kind of Peace A Novel Siri Bergman Camilla Grebe Åsa Träff Paul Norlen 9781451654592 Books Reviews

We may be our own worst enemies, according to sisters Camilla Grebe and Åsa Träff. In "Some Kind of Peace" (translated from the Swedish by Paul Norland), Grebe and Träff expose their characters' painful feelings of self-loathing, loneliness, rage, grief, and fear. The narrator, psychologist Siri Bergman, is treating twenty-five year old Sara Matteus, a troubled woman who chain smokes, chews on her hair, and cuts her skin. Siri herself is still trying to come to terms with the loss of her husband, Stefan, who died in a diving accident. Fortunately, work keeps Bergman centered. She is a skilled and compassionate therapist who helps her patients alter their distorted thoughts and self-destructive behavior.

Grebe and Träff's prose is hauntingly descriptive. Siri's home outside of Stockholm is an isolated and idyllic retreat with a view of the sea, wild vegetation, and "small wind-whipped pines." In the middle of summer, Siri notices the "sultry sweet and suffocating" scents of nature and "the unmistakable smell of decomposition." This is a metaphor for the prison that Siri's sanctuary has become. She has distanced herself from all but a few friends, drinks to excess, and clings obsessively to memories of Stefan. Bergman is terrified of the dark and leaves the lights on even when she sleeps. To make matters worse, someone is stalking Siri and those closest to her. For some inexplicable reason, this person despises Suri and wishes to harm her physically and emotionally.

"Some Kind of Peace" is a compelling and well-crafted thriller (apart from a few far-fetched coincidences that strain credulity), in which the authors explore the fragility of the human psyche. Traumatic childhood experiences, a relationship gone sour, or the death of a loved one, for example, can produce severe distress and even emotional breakdowns in vulnerable men and women who "cautiously maneuver around catastrophe every day." Träff, a practicing psychologist, understands the delicacy of the therapeutic relationship, which is beautifully depicted in scenes between Siri and her clients. In addition, Grebe and Träff ratchet up the suspense as the perpetrator's acts of violence steadily escalate. Ultimately, Siri must confront her ruthless adversary and also deal with the profound guilt and anxiety that stand in the way of her happiness.

a page turner. what is it about these swedish writers? they certainly keep us turning the pages. a great, suspenseful and thought provoking read.
Well written, craftily paced, excellent characters. The suspense mounts which each chapter. The descriptions of the Swedish fall complements and add atmosphere to the narrative. Great story.
loved the book. I hope she will write more. I found myself more interested in these books than I have been for quite some time.
This held my interest most of the time, but it was needlessly prolonged. I kept waiting for the main character, who is supposed to be a therapist, to come to her senses. After she gets a letter with a picture of herself and repeated evidence someone's been in her house, the police ask if someone is threatening her and she says "no." She keeps saying no for most of the book. She has so little insight about herself, she was barely credible. The plot is engaging and other characters are real enough, but the resolution depends on a fact not disclosed until almost the end of the book. I was often tempted to stop reading but it's a good enough story to read to the end.
